Working with OVL files - netraam003 - 12.11.2020

Dear all,

For a GIS at work i am forced to work with OVL files. to make my work (a whole lot) easier i would like to be able to convert shapefiles to ovl files.

i have been trying to convert my shapefiles to KML and after that using RouteConverter to OVL.

problems im facing are: Ovl files made in my work GIS cant be read in RouteConverter and Ovl files made in RouteConverter cant be read in my work GIS...

Does anyone have any experience working with Ovl files?

I have attached an Ovl file from my work GIS, maybe someone more clever than me can figure this out? (edit: i cant upload Ovl files apperantly)

Thanks a bunch guys.

Please put the 2 files into a ZIP before uploading

Hi netraam003,

the "02. Hydrology filefromworkGIS.ovl" file that you've sent shares the same file extension .ovl with the "Top50 OVL ASCII (.ovl)" format that is implemented in RouteConverter but it's completely different. It's a rather weird (sorry) XML format that looks different than most other formats I've seen so far. "MagicMaps Project (.ikt)" seems to be the closest match.

Which GIS is it?

It is a military used GIS.

Tomorrow I will try if it accepts the magicmaps project file type!

Thanks guys

Hmmm. That as well as the file extension OVL reminds me of EADS's GeoGrid GIS, part of which is used in civil land survey, too. GeoGrid OVL files first existed as binary and ASCII types, afaik EADS added an XML type OVL eventually. GeoGrid should currently be at version 7, and as of version 4 there was a plugin named "Navigation" which could export and import GPX files. So, should my guesswork be correct you might want to have a look if this plugin exists. Wink
