Feature Request

Hi There!

Congrats to your exellent tool!

I am a newbie concerning GPS tracking and bought a garmin Legend HCx some days ago. With your tool I was able to convert any gpx tracks to routes. Great!

You have some selection algorythms to define which point sould be deleted, to "simplify" the track. I would find it extremely usefull if there was another option which would select points that don't differ in an certain angle from the previouse point. So you could eliminate all points that are on a straight line (or nearly straight line) except the two points on the edge. This would extremely reduce the number of points while not loosing the shape of the track. Something like a lossless compression Tongue If you'd add the possibility to combine that condition with your already implemented distance-query you'd really have one of the most powerful tools of track-editing out there.

GPS TrackMaker in the light editing can reduce the tracks, but you can't really take influence on which points are deleted.

Again, the tool sofar is really great, keep up the good work!

Hi Maenny,

nice idea. Do you have a lot of tracks that have a lot of points that do not differ in there angle?

Well the last track I had, which I wanted to convert into a route had about 500 points (not so much). But my Legend HCx only allows routes with 250 Points. When I used GPS Trackmaker it changed the track to 150 points while slightly changing the shape of the track in high resolution areas or areas where there where sharp turns. So when you have tracks that were recorded with a distance or time-based grid, you most certainly have points on straight lines that could easily be removed without changing the track. When I searched for a simplifying program I read a lot in other forums where people had the same problems. If you have large tracks with over 3000 points, many of the lower-price handheld GPS units reach their maximum in points and you`d have to split the tracks. Of course that can also be done, but I think it would be a nice feature that could be implemented without too much effort. (I may be wrong, though)

Indeed, this would be a handy feature. My tracklogger is logging each 10 seconds, and if you are moving (almost) straightforward, these points do not add so much to the route.

In the latest prerelease version I've introduced the Douglas Peucker Algorithm for simplifying tracks. Please try if that solves your use case.
